A spreadsheet is overkill for a trip and a calculator forgets the numbers. This is the whole plan in one note. Every line updates as you change a number.
The example
Trip budget
flight = 450
hotel = 89 * 3
food = 50 * 4
transport = 35
shopping = 120
stay = flight + hotel → 717
extras = food + transport → 235
trip = stay + extras + shopping → 1,072
each = trip / 2 → 536
buffer = trip * 0.1 → 107.2
Why it works this way
- Name every number.
hotel = 89 * 3reads as “three nights at 89” six months later. A bare267does not. - Blank lines are sections. The costs, the subtotals and the per-person split are separated so
sumwould only see the group you mean. - Change one thing, see everything. Add a night:
hotel = 89 * 4.stay,trip,eachandbufferall update.
In the local currency
Give the numbers a currency and convert the total in one line. Rates are live, so treat the figures here as illustrative.
flight = $450
hotel = $89 * 3
food = $50 * 4
sum in yen ≈ ¥136,000
sum collects the section; in yen converts it. sum in krw, sum in euro work the same way.
Splitting between friends
trip = 1072
people = 4
trip / people → 268
Or as a proportion, when one person pays a larger share: 1072 : 4 = ? : 1 → 268.
Days and dates
today + 12 days → departure
today + 19 days → return
Calto adds days, weeks, months or years to today.
