Split a Bill with Tip and Tax

Add tax and tip, split evenly or by what each person ordered, and handle someone who is paying for two. A text calculator example you can paste into Calto.

Splitting a bill is three small calculations that people do in their head badly. Written down, it is obvious and everyone can check it.

Even split with tip

dinner = 86.40
tip = 18% of dinner            → 15.55
total = dinner + tip           → 101.95
people = 4
each = total / people          → 25.49

18% of dinner is the tip. 18% on dinner would give you the total directly (101.95) if you prefer one line.

Tax and tip on top

food = 72
withTax = 8.5% on food        → 78.12
withTip = 20% on prev         → 93.74
each = prev / 3                → 31.25

prev is the previous line’s result, so you can chain markups without naming every step.

Uneven shares: pay for what you ordered

Shared
starter = 14
wine = 32
shared = sum / 3          → 15.33

Ana
ana = 24 + shared         → 39.33

Ben
ben = 31 + shared         → 46.33

Cho
cho = 19 + shared         → 34.33

Each blank line starts a new section, so sum in the first block only adds the shared items.

One person covers two

total = 101.95
shares = 5
share = total / shares     → 20.39
mia = share * 2            → 40.78

Different currencies at the table

mine = $40
theirs = 35000 KRW
mine + theirs                  ≈ ₩93,800

Mixed currency lines convert to the last currency written. The rate is live; the figure above is only illustrative.
