Grocery Budget While You Shop

Keep a running total as you add items to the cart, watch the remaining budget, apply a discount, and compare unit prices. A Calto note example.

Updated: 2026-09-16

Type items as you put them in the cart. The total is always at the bottom and never wrong.

Running total against a budget

budget = 60

milk = 3.20
eggs = 6.50
fruit = 12
chicken = 9.80
rice = 2 * 4.25
spent = sum                    → 40

left = budget - spent          → 20

The blank line after budget keeps it out of sum. Add or remove an item and spent and left follow.

Discounts and multi-buy

coffee = 9.90
sale = 15% off coffee   → 8.42
cereal = 3 * 4.20
deal = 10% off prev     → 11.34

15% off is a discount, 15% on is a markup, 15% of is just the percentage.

Which pack is cheaper?

A proportion answers “what would 1 kg cost?” without a formula.

500 : 4.80 = 1000 : ?          → 9.60
750 : 6.90 = 1000 : ?          → 9.20

The 750 g pack is cheaper per kilo. You can also convert units first: 1.5lb in kg → 0.68.

Weekly totals

Mon
groceries = 40

Wed
groceries = 22.50

Sat
groceries = 58

Each day is its own section. Put a line with 40 + 22.50 + 58 at the bottom, or name the days and add the names.
